RESOURCE CRITIQUE- "Feeling the Fall" Lesson Plan

ELA standard LAFS.1.W.2.6

Things I liked :

  • I loved that this lesson addresses all styles of learning. Students who are more visual learners, are able to read the scripts they will present in Reader's Theater while students who are more auditory not only hear the 'fall song' but also audibly hear other students perform. Day 3 of the lesson is perfect for kinesthetic learners, they are able to apply what they have read and heard in the classroom and go outside and use their senses to really understand what the season fall is.
  • Also, I really like how students work in groups throughout the lesson. Early elementary is so important for the development of social and interactive skills. I think it's great that each student is assigned a specific role, but also the class gets to work together as a whole. Early on in the lesson, students must work together in order to successfully read and present their scripts. Later, specific roles (leader, time keeper, recorder, discussion manager) are in place when students are using all 5 senses to define fall. The last two days involve the whole class sharing data and creating a chart of the different senses and how each one interacts differently with the fall season.
  • I like how this lesson really relates to what is going on around students. Since it is meant to be done at the beginning of fall, I feel students will be more engaged because they get to go outside and experience what they are learning about, making it more memorable and applicable to their own lives.

Things to be Improved:
  • I feel like technology could be better incorporated into the lesson. I like how the teacher will use technology to play the fall song at the beginning of the lesson. But all students do with technology is publish their sentence of what they learned outside. I think you could better integrate technology by creating the senses chart from day 4 online, whether it be with a smart board, excel, or even a simple table on Word.
  • I think using a whole week for these activities might be a little extensive. you can probably condense the Reader's Theater and have them present after only one day. Since you only go outside on day 3 for 15 minutes, I feel you can incorporate some of Day 4 writing after completing the chart on day 3. This would condense the lesson to only 3- 3 1/2 days instead of an entire week.

Comments

  1. I agree that this lesson could definitely incorporate more technology! I saw timing issues in resource, too, so I agree that your improvement list would really add to the lesson.

  2. Wanting to be an elementary school teacher too, I think that this lesson is the perfect way for students to be engaged in what they are learning. I also believe that this lesson will be something that they remember and think of every time they think of senses!

  3. Though I am not planning to be an elementary education teacher, I think I may end up becoming an English as a Foreign Language Teacher. I can see either this program or a similar program being helpful to use in order to teach non-native speakers senses in English. The graphics would be helpful to give the non-native speakers a picture to think of in order to remind them of the senses they were studying. It would also be helpful to teach my students about the different seasons.
