Throughout my early experiences with having  a twitter for educational purposes, I have been able to interact with other aspiring teachers, as well as people who are already teachers and big education corporations. I find it beneficial in this class because it allows you to really see what a big topic  technology is and how widespread it is throughout the field of technology. I think twitter is great for teachers, and in my future career I will be able to use it for learning about different resources and educational technologies, and is an easy way to stay up to date with all of the new advances and things happening within education by following pages like The US Dept. of Education, Education Weekly, etc. Using hashtags like #FSUEdTech is a great way for teachers to see how their coworkers/ peers from around the world feel, approach and incorporate different situations and strategies into their classroom.
The digital divide is the gap between students who have readily available access and experience with technology and those who don't have this access. Factors including socioeconomic status, amount of technology at home, school funding, etc. This divide can affect student success because the student who is used to always having technology at home is able to use all of it's resources to gain extra practice, experience and confidence in technology use which is a crucial part of today's workforce. Where as the student without technology access will not gain these skills or confidence with technology. Not having readily available access to technology can really hurt a student in today's technology driven world. As teachers it is important to be aware of our student's technology access outside of the classroom. If student's don't have internet access at home it is important to not assign anything that will penalize their grade because of it, allowing them to still have successful grades. Incorporating technology even more into your lessons or offering to let students stay before or after school to gain technology skills/extra practice can help close the divide and allow for students who don't have access to technology at home will let them gain the confidence and skills needed in today's technology- centered world.
As a first grade teacher I think I would mostly use academic, application, and graphic softwares. Using educational games is a great academic software that engages children and helps them practice in a learning environment that is structured like video games familiar to them. Drill- practice is another amazing way to let students grasp concepts at their own pace, while gaining instant feedback to they can fix their mistakes. Another academic softwareI think would be effective is using brainstorming software, it allows kids to grasp large concept ideas by allowing them to actually see on their computer screen how all the aspects of the concept they are learning connect. Application software, such as the office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, etc. is a great way for elementary students to be exposed to the organized, multimedia presentations, student writing, and other active learning assignments that will greatly impact their academics as they move through school. Gaining basic skills and confidence in these programs early sets students up for future success. Lastly,  I think graphic software like Microsoft Paint is a great way to allow children to show creativity through technology. On the other hand, I believe Imaging Software and Academic databases would be less effective in the elementary classroom. Imaging software including animation that makes many still images combine to mimic movement is avery big concept that is probably too complex for young elementary schoolers to comprehend. I also think that in 1st grade, focus in technology will be more on practicing foundational skills and gaining basic reading and writing skills, making academic databases that give information in depth and research will probably not be used as much in the early elementary classroom.
